About P.J. Hoffmaster State Park
Hoffmaster is a 1,200-acre park just south of Muskegon, built around one of the largest and most ecologically significant dune complexes on the Lake Michigan shoreline. The park is named for Percy J. Hoffmaster, one of the founders of Michigan's state park system, and its visitor center honors conservationist Genevieve Gillette, who helped protect the dunes from development.
The campground sits inland from the dunes in a mix of hardwood and conifer forest, a short walk or drive from 3 miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline. Nearly every site is electric, which makes this one of the more RV-friendly parks on the west side of the state, and its location — 30 minutes from Muskegon and under an hour from Grand Rapids — keeps demand high on summer weekends.
Hoffmaster's electric sites are some of the most requested in the Muskegon area. Summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) regularly book out within minutes of the 6-month reservation window opening. Fall shoulder-season dates are much easier to land.
Campground Loops — Which One Is Right for You
Hoffmaster's modern campground is organized into a handful of loops built around three shared bathhouse and shower buildings, with a small non-electric section and a separate rustic group camp for larger parties.

Sites closest to the central bathhouse buildings go first, especially those with 50-amp service for larger rigs. If you want quiet over convenience, ask about sites toward the edges of the modern loops, away from the shared shower buildings.
The Dune Climb Stairway & Gillette Visitor Center
The signature experience at Hoffmaster is the Dune Climb Stairway, a wooden staircase that climbs one of the tallest dunes on the Michigan coast to an observation deck with a sweeping view of Lake Michigan. It's steep — plan on a slow climb with kids or on a hot day — but it's one of the best sunset spots on the west side of the state.
The park's Gillette Sand Dune Visitor Center sits at the base of the climb and has exhibits on how the dune ecosystem forms and survives. From there, over 10 miles of trails fan out through the dunes and forest, including the Dune Climb Stairway loop, the Walk-a-Mile nature trail, and the longer Homestead Trail.

The 6-Month Window Strategy
Reservations open on MiDNRReservations.com at 8:00 AM Eastern (Monday–Friday) or 9:00 AM Eastern (Saturday–Sunday), exactly 6 months before your arrival date. For a Saturday in July, that means marking your calendar for the corresponding January date and being logged in and ready to search the moment the window opens.

What to Know Before You Camp
Hookups and Amenities
Nearly all modern sites have electric hookups at 20, 30, or 50 amp. There are no full hookups (no water or sewer at individual sites) — a sanitation dump station with potable water is available near the campground entrance, along with three modern restroom and shower buildings.
Dune & Beach Access
The park protects 3 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and one of the largest freshwater dune ecosystems in the world. Stay on marked trails and the Dune Climb Stairway — the dunes are fragile, and off-trail hiking damages the plants that hold them in place.
Pets
Pets are allowed in the campground on a 6-foot leash and under control at all times. Dogs are permitted along the Lake Michigan shoreline but not in the designated swim area.
