Our Story

Built by a Michigan camper who got tired of losing.

How It Started

I just wanted a site at Ludington.

I did not grow up camping. I came to it as an adult and fell completely in love with it — the way it forces you to slow down, the way it pulls your family away from screens and back toward each other, the way a morning cup of coffee tastes completely different when you are sitting in the woods listening to nothing in particular.

Once camping got its hooks in me, I wanted more of it. And like every Michigan camper who gets serious, I set my sights on Ludington State Park. The famous dunes, the beach on Lake Michigan, the lighthouse trail — it had everything. I wanted to take my family there more than anywhere else in the state.

So I did what every Michigan camper does. I went to MiDNRReservations.com at 8 AM on the morning the 6-month booking window opened, and I refreshed and clicked and refreshed and clicked — and got nothing. Every site was gone, seemingly before I could even get the page to load properly. I tried again the next window. And the one after that. It took years — literally years — before my family finally got a site at Ludington.

By then I had become something of an expert in how Michigan's reservation system actually works. I knew the exact times windows opened, how cancellations flowed back into the system, which dates and sites had the best odds. I had learned it all the hard way, through failure and obsessive research.

That knowledge felt too useful to keep to myself.

Why MittenCamper Exists

Michigan campers deserve better tools.

Michigan has 85 state parks with camping. Most of them are genuinely spectacular — world-class destinations that people travel from across the country to visit. But the system for getting into them is a confusing, stressful, first-come-first-served scramble that rewards obsessive refreshing over actual planning.

Nobody was building a real resource for Michigan campers. There were a few generic camping apps that covered every state, a handful of old blog posts, and the DNR's own website which tells you where parks are but not how hard they actually are to book or what strategies actually work.

MittenCamper is the site I wish had existed when I started. Real demand ratings based on how competitive each park actually is. Honest guides to each campground — not marketing copy, but the actual information you need to decide where to go and how to get in. A booking calculator that tells you exactly when your reservation window opens and what time to be ready. And CampDrop — an alert system that watches MiDNRReservations.com for you around the clock and texts you the moment a cancelled site opens up.

It is everything a Michigan camper needs in one place. Built by someone who needed it himself.

Our mission is simple: Help Michigan families spend more time outdoors. Michigan has some of the best camping in America. More people should be able to experience it — not just the ones who happen to be sitting at their computer at exactly the right moment.

What We Believe

A few things we stand for.

🏕️
Camping changes people
Time outdoors — away from screens, schedules, and noise — does something real for families and individuals. We take that seriously. Getting people into Michigan's parks matters.
📋
Honest information only
We do not write marketing copy about parks. We tell you what the campground is actually like, how hard it actually is to book, and what strategies actually work. No fluff.
Speed matters
Cancellations at top Michigan parks disappear in seconds. Our CampDrop alert system scans every 60 seconds for Blaze subscribers — because a 5-minute delay is the difference between getting the site and missing it.
🤝
Built for real campers
We are Michigan campers ourselves. We have lost the sites we wanted, done the early-morning scramble, and spent summers planning trips around park booking windows. We built this for people like us.

Introducing CampDrop

CampDrop is MittenCamper's campsite alert system. It monitors MiDNRReservations.com around the clock — every 60 seconds for Blaze subscribers, every 3 minutes for Spark — and sends you a text message the moment a cancelled site opens up at the park you are watching.

You tell us which park, which dates, and what type of site you want. We watch it for you. When something opens up you get a text immediately so you can go book it before anyone else does.

It is the tool I wished existed when I was spending years trying to get into Ludington. Less than a bundle of firewood a month. No annual commitment. Pause anytime.

Where We Are Headed

This is just the beginning.

Right now MittenCamper covers Michigan's DNR state parks and key Recreation.gov parks like Sleeping Bear Dunes. We are building out full campground guides for all 85 parks — with campground maps, site-by-site tips, hidden gem sites, and the kind of insider knowledge that only comes from actually camping there or talking to people who have.

We are also a small operation — Michigan-based, camper-built, bootstrapped from nothing. If MittenCamper has helped you get a site, tell a friend. That is genuinely how we grow, and it is how we keep building.

Now go book a site. Michigan's parks are waiting.
