About Traverse City State Park
Traverse City State Park has long been known as Michigan's most urban state park — a 75-acre campground about 2 miles from downtown Traverse City, with a quarter-mile sandy beach on East Grand Traverse Bay and direct access to the TART Trail for biking into wine country. Established in 1920 and renamed in 2011 for conservationist Keith J. Charters, it's normally one of the hardest campgrounds in the state to book because of how walkable it is to restaurants, the National Cherry Festival, and day trips out to Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Right now, though, this is a park to plan for rather than book for this season.
Traverse City State Park's campground has been closed since July 7, 2025 for an $8.5 million federally funded renovation, and it will remain closed through the entire 2026 camping season. The DNR's scheduled reopening date is April 1, 2027. The day-use area — beach, picnic grounds, and trails — remains open during construction, but no campsites are bookable at this park until the project wraps up. What the Campground Normally Looks Like
When the campground is open, Traverse City State Park runs 348 electric sites across three loops — West, Central, and East — plus two mini cabins. Every site has electricity (a mix of 20, 30, and 50 amp), though there are no full hookups; a dump and fill station handles water and sewer needs instead.

Downtown Traverse City & Grand Traverse Bay
The reason this park has always been in such high demand is location: a quarter-mile sandy beach right on East Grand Traverse Bay, and a direct connection to the 10.5-mile TART Trail, which links to the 17-mile Leelanau Trail for biking straight into Old Mission and Leelanau Peninsula wine country. Downtown Traverse City's restaurants and the National Cherry Festival (every July) are an easy walk or bike ride away, and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is about 40–45 minutes west for a day trip.
None of that changes once the campground reopens — if anything, a fully renovated campground in this location is likely to be even harder to book, so it's worth planning early for the 2027 season.

How Reservations Will Work When the Campground Reopens
Once bookings resume, Traverse City State Park will use the same system as every other Michigan state park: the 6-month advance window on MiDNRReservations.com, plus last-minute cancellations in between.
The 6-Month Window Strategy
Reservations normally open at 8:00 AM Eastern (Monday–Friday) or 9:00 AM Eastern (Saturday–Sunday), exactly 6 months before your arrival date. Given the park's popularity before the closure, expect summer weekends for the April 2027 reopening to book out within seconds once the window opens.

Hookups and Amenities
All sites are expected to remain electric-only (20/30/50 amp) after the renovation, with three modern restroom and shower buildings, a sanitation/dump station, playground, and recycling center.
Beach Access
The park's quarter-mile sandy beach on East Grand Traverse Bay is open now as part of the day-use area, even while the campground is closed, so it's still worth a visit if you're in Traverse City this season.
Pets
Pets are allowed on a 6-foot leash under the owner's control, with a designated pet walk area between the campground and US-31.
Season Dates
Normal camping season runs roughly mid-April through mid-to-late October. For 2026, no camping season applies — the campground reopens April 1, 2027.
