If lake views matter most, the 13 waterfront sites are the ones to chase — but they book first. For a quieter stay near the ORV entrance, ask about wooded sites closer to the dune area access point.
The Silver Lake Sand Dunes ORV Area
The park's 450-acre ORV area is the reason many campers come to Silver Lake in the first place — it's the only place east of the Mississippi where you can legally ride dune buggies, ATVs, and off-road motorcycles over open sand dunes. Riding requires an ORV license, an ORV trail permit, and a Recreation Passport, and the area is typically open April 1 through October 31.
If you don't own a rig, local outfitters near the park entrance rent dune buggies and offer guided tours, and Mac Wood's Dune Rides runs a classic 40-minute guided ride through the dunes seasonally. Hookups and Amenities
Sites offer 20- and 30-amp electric service. There are no full hookups at individual sites — a sanitation dump station with potable water is available in the campground, along with modern restroom and shower buildings.
ORV Area & Beach Access
The ORV dune area requires its own permit and license and runs on a seasonal schedule (typically 9 AM–8 PM in spring/fall, 9 AM–10 PM in summer). Silver Lake's swimming beach is separate from the ORV riding area, so families camping without a rig can still enjoy the water safely.
Pets
Pets are allowed in the campground on a 6-foot leash, with owners required to stay in control at all times. Pets are not permitted in designated swim beach areas; check current signage for pet rules near the ORV dune area before bringing one along on a ride.
