Winter Camping in Michigan: What's Still Open (and Bookable)

Tent camping winds down in November, but Michigan's state parks don't actually close. Here's what you can still book once the campgrounds empty out — and what it costs.

If you've read our guide to 2026 fall and winter closure dates, you already know most electric and modern campsites shut off water service and wind down for the season by late October or November. What that guide doesn't cover is what happens after — because for a growing number of campers, November isn't the end of the season. It's just the start of a different one.

Why Winter Camping Is Having a Moment

Winter lodging isn't for everyone — a sub-freezing night in a wood-heated yurt is a different experience than a July weekend at the beach. But if you've ever been priced out of a summer reservation at one of Michigan's busiest parks, winter is the easiest season to actually get a site. The same cabins that disappear in minutes every July are frequently still open the week before a January weekend.

The Tents Go Away, the Cabins Take Over

Michigan's state parks don't hibernate for winter. Once the standard campground season winds down, more than 30 parks switch over to heated lodging — camper cabins, mini-cabins, rustic cabins, yurts, and in a handful of parks, full modern lodges. These book through the exact same MiDNRReservations.com system as a summer tent site, on the same 6-month rolling window, which means winter lodging can sell out just as fast as a Fourth of July weekend if you don't know it exists.

Good to Know

Heated doesn't always mean electric. Several rustic cabins and every yurt option rely on a wood stove or propane heater instead of a thermostat. Bring enough firewood or fuel for the whole stay — most parks don't sell it on-site after hours.

Winter Lodging Options, by Price

Pricing and availability vary by park, but here's how the five lodging categories break down:

Modern Lodges
Price varies by park · sleeps 6–24
Fully furnished, with kitchens and real bedrooms — enough space for a family reunion. Available at Porcupine Mountains, Tahquamenon Falls, Twin Lakes, P.J. Hoeft, Fayette, and Proud Lake.
Camper Cabins — $80/night
Sleeps up to 6 · electric & heat
Two bedrooms plus a living room with a futon. Bring your own bedding and cookware. Offered at 10 parks, including Tahquamenon Falls, Waterloo, Holland, and Tawas.
Mini-Cabins — $35/night
Sleeps 4 · one room, electric & heat
The cheapest heated option on this list — bunk beds in a single room. Found at North Higgins Lake, Ludington, Muskegon, Sleeper, and several others.
Rustic Cabins — $50–$80/night
Sleeps 2–24 · most without electricity
Most rely on a woodstove, not a thermostat. The widest selection on the list — 17 parks, including Hartwick Pines, Porcupine Mountains, and Wilderness.
Yurts — $60/night
Sleeps 4–5 · propane or wood heat
Round, canvas-sided structures that split the difference between cabin and tent. Only at Porcupine Mountains and Pinckney Recreation Area — these book early.

Book It Like You'd Book a Summer Weekend

Winter lodging runs on the identical 6-month booking window as everything else on MiDNRReservations.com — new dates release at 8am ET on weekdays and 9am ET on weekends, and the standard $8 online booking fee applies the same way. See our breakdown of how the booking calendar works if you haven't locked in next year's dates yet. The most popular units — especially the yurts at Porcupine Mountains — tend to book out for weekends and holiday weeks the moment their window opens, so if you have a specific date in mind, mark your calendar for exactly six months out.

Worth Knowing Before You Go

A few things that catch first-time winter campers off guard: most rustic cabins and all yurts have no running water once the park's seasonal water lines are shut off, so plan to bring your own or use a vault toilet. Road plowing inside the park is usually limited to the main loop near the cabins — call the park office before you drive in after a storm. And because many of these units don't have reliable cell signal, download your reservation confirmation and directions before you leave home.
